Unless you're a zoologist, most of us do not know much about any animal in particular - least of all the Sloth. This is the reason illustrated for the Sloth Institute in Costa Rica to aid in the process to educate everyone about these gentle creatures.
There are two families of sloth and six species total, two of which are critically endangered or vulnerable. Fluctuations in the environment are part of the problem contributing to the dwindling numbers of sloths. The biggest factor affecting sloths is humans. While sloths are seemingly gleeful due to their semi-permanent "smize", they die in large numbers from stress of being pet, and held in human captivity. The Sloth Institute aims to rehabilitate and release sloths into a natural and safe environment.
